Application - Portraiture is the impression of someone by the photographer's view, it also gives the idea of the power taken away by the person having there picture taken, and gives the power to the camera taker. It shows the purpose of the person in a photo and key features are noticed in the picture which resemble the person's personality and what there life consists of. Its like a identification of an individual. Diane arbus who was a famous photographer wanted to witness the mood of the nation through the camera, she took alot of pictures of children to get the feelings of the younger people.
Contexts - Portraiture can be found in many places and is used in everyday life, ID cards have a portrait of the person who's card it is and shows that person who they are. Passports are the same its to show the person and there personal information together to give a representation of that individual. Also coins are a form of portraiture because the queens head is placed on these and its to show that its to do with royalty such as the Bank Of England, its implemented in everything.
Techniques - There are many techiniques towards portraiture, photographers sometimes try to make the person relax so that the picture feels real and not poseable. They want to get the general image and not a put on shot. Studio photography is a common way of photographing somone and the lighting is all controlled so that they can get professional looking style pictures. The typical portrait always shows the head and body as this gives the defination of the person being seen, also the page orientation is different to landscape because when the paper is turned over a portrait picture can fit the whole page up to down.
