Portraiture

Application - Portraiture is the impression of someone by the photographer's view, it also gives the idea of the power taken away by the person having there picture taken, and gives the power to the camera taker. It shows the purpose of the person in a photo and key features are noticed in the picture which resemble the person's personality and what there life consists of. Its like a identification of an individual. Diane arbus who was a famous photographer wanted to witness the mood of the nation through the camera, she took alot of pictures of children to get the feelings of the younger people.

Contexts - Portraiture can be found in many places and is used in everyday life, ID cards have a portrait of the person who's card it is and shows that person who they are. Passports are the same its to show the person and there personal information together to give a representation of that individual. Also coins are a form of portraiture because the queens head is placed on these and its to show that its to do with royalty such as the Bank Of England, its implemented in everything.

Techniques - There are many techiniques towards portraiture, photographers sometimes try to make the person relax so that the picture feels real and not poseable. They want to get the general image and not a put on shot. Studio photography is a common way of photographing somone and the lighting is all controlled so that they can get professional looking style pictures. The typical portrait always shows the head and body as this gives the defination of the person being seen, also the page orientation is different to landscape because when the paper is turned over a portrait picture can fit the whole page up to down.

Photo Journalism

Context - Photojournalism is when the truth of certain pictures is not all that it seems and may not be real. Now that technology has arrived we have learned different methods to manipulate pictures so that the scenarios can be dramatically altered. Photojournalism to me is pictures taken and are placed in magazines and on the internet.

Application - The many pictures that are around are seen on magazines, books and now with the internet, these pictures are used to show major events in the past and present and are changed to show a different story.

Techniques - A famous camera that Henri Cartier Bresson used was the Leica it was introduced in 1925 in Germany and was the first portable device to be used. It glides with ease when the picture is taken and it was easy for photographers as you could look with the left eye and snap shots with the right hand. Also the camera being portable it was easier for the user to quickly snap a photo instead of bringing alot of photography equipment with them. Decisive moment is a major techinique to the photographers as it takes a split second of the world in a different perspective, Robert Capa, Henri-Cartier Bresson and Tony Vaccaro all used this techinique to fulfull there pictures.

Henri Cartier Bresson was a french photographer and was classed the godfather of decisive moment, he was a surrealist who would wait patiently for his scenerios to take place and would always sense something would happen. He would take pictures fraction of a second and if he missed that decisive moment the picture would completly change, the work he produced would predict historic events just through being in the right place and the right time.

Robert Capa was a photographer in the World War 2 between 1939-1945 he was the world's greatest war photographer. He went off with the first wave of troops and wanted to get the most realistic and truthful pictures of the suffering and brutal reality of what the war was doing. He took pictures for Life magazine and took 4 rolls of 35mm film unfortunatly 3 of the rolls were destroyed so was left with the 1 reminaing roll which included 11 frames. He risked his life to get the perfect pictures and gained celebrity status for his looks and famous for his shots.

Intro To Photography

My name is Daniel and I feel photography is a way of showing images in different sitauations such as fictional scenarios and also surreal images. Im interested in photography because i like getting behind a camera and taking shots in a really unusual way. It's good way for telling a story or just generally when your out and about theres a picture for anything.
